Living Green

More and more, people are realizing the dangers of in home toxins. There are many diseases, allergies and illnesses associated with many of the toxic building materials and the toxins we buy and bring into the home. Most of us do not have any control over external environmental toxins. However, we have lots of control on what is inside our homes.

It is fabulous that many new builders are now constructing homes, condos etc. with "Green" materials, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. Many of us can't just pick up and go buy a green friendly new home. So we may not be able to change or completely remodel the homes we now have, however, there is much we can do to keep the inside of our homes as toxic free as possible.
Our health is that important for us and our families! We can eat a high quality diet, exercise, etc, and still be
experiencing health challenges due to indoor pollutants.

All commercial cleaning supplies are full of toxins! Most of these can damage your lungs and make you generally sick.  I strongly recommend the health food store cleaning supplies. Shaklee products are also toxic free and wonderful. For those of you who must use toxins of any kind,  I recommend wearing the best quality mask and goggles to protect your eyes, protective clothing, and go outdoors to use those highly toxic products.

I recommend getting rid of everything that
is a commercial product in your home. We don't often realize that our skin is a huge sponge and takes in everything in our air and is absorbed in our blood and tissues. Your body becomes that which you absorb. Even commerical dishsoap fumes can make us sick without us realizing it. I recommend anyone that can afford it to get rid of all carpet in the home. Tile, slate, wood etc. is the best, and easy to keep clean. Carpet is the most bacteria ridden toxic material you can have in your home, no matter how well you clean it!!!!!  You can also get "Green" window treatments. Research online. Certain types of curtains are very toxic, and also breeding grounds for bacteria and dustmites.

There are many websites devoted to creating toxic free home environments. I urge you all to investigate and take charge of this health sapping issue.

The awareness of the dangers in the home environment has been a recent discovery, although I have known about it my entire life. Some of the terms that have appeared in recent literature are "household toxins" and "indoor air pollution."
Over the past few years the medical and scientific communities have started recognizing that common household chemicals and
environment outgasing from new carpets and furnishings including the concern for air quality can have an adverse effect on our health.

This is why it is not recommended to redecorate a baby's room for their arrival especially with new carpet and paint.
When we learn how these toxins affect us especially our children we are sure you will want to change the way you live.

Like most people, we assumed that if a product is on the shelf at our local market, it must have passed reasonable safety standards and be safe. Of course there is always the products marked as poison or caustic with the skull and crossbones emblem on the
label and we know to keep these products out of reach of children.

Most people are unaware  that regular consumer products that we all use every day have toxins and chemicals that can be extremely harmful to children and our family.

Many of these ingredients would require special handling if used in industry; a chemical laboratory; or in the workplace. The fact is
that there are strict rules and regulations required to protect workers who may use these same substances in the industrial environment where they are required to use protective equipment clothing or gloves and masks when using some of the very same products found in every home.

When we use these same substances at home we do so with no protection at all and no knowledge of the danger and with no consideration for ventilation or protective equipment.

Many of the household chemicals that can cause serious reactions are listed in toxicology books as having known toxic effects.
Is your home environment or products slowly poisoning your family in their own home causing energy depletion, allergies and other chronic conditions?

Some people are also more sensitive than others and their problems can become "serious" illnesses. Unfortunately many of these reactions take years of repeated exposure to manifest themselves and are sometimes wrongly diagnosed as part of the aging process; considered incurable or even thought of as all in our head.

While certain people may be more
sensitive than others, and some chemicals may bring on reactions only after many years of repeated exposure or only in a small percentage of the population, chemicals in the home can put everyone at risk especially our children. Children are also more vulnerable to this threat in our time because they sometimes lead sedentary lifestyles spending a lot more time indoors playing video games and watching TV.

Toxins deplete our bodies immune system by continually creating a stressful environment in our bodies which can contribute to illness and fatigue.

Many symptoms that some people have that others assume are imagined, both physical and psychological, have been associated with certain environments including our homes.
Of course at greatest risk are children, the elderly, and those who are already ill. Ironically these same people spend most of their time at home. A recent study announced on CFTO news in March indicated that women who work at home and or are home makers have up to a 55% higher cancer rate than women who work outside the home.

There is an alternative!! You can immediately begin to detoxify your home with environmentally friendly and
natural household and personal care products and clean fresh air. Read on to learn more about improving the air quality in your home.

A secondary issue that we mentioned
at the beginning was poor air quality
or "indoor air pollution".
The quality of our indoor air has been affected by the need for energy conservation and air tight houses.
With winter heating and summer air conditioning we almost never totally air out the house. This means the air circulating in your home is extremely stale and probably toxic or polluted.

This can be corrected with a "Plusaire" system from "Pure Air Plus" that can be installed on forced air residential systems to exchange your indoor air up to 6 times in a 24 hour period.
Those who have had the system installed and where suffering from asthma and those with smokers in the home have noticed the most significant difference with symptoms being reduced by 50% or more.

Just think how different your environment can become if you use non toxic products and introduce fresh air into your home, the results are nothing short of remarkable!

The more you eliminate toxins in your home, the better you and your family will feel.
There are basically three ways that toxins can enter the body:
by swallowing, by breathing, or by contact with
the skin or eyes. When most people hear about a chemical poisoning, they usually think about swallowing (ingestion). Every year, over five million household poisonings are reported, the immediate result of accidental ingestion of cleaning, pesticide, personal care and other common household products.
Many of these poisonings are fatal, and most of the victims are children

The personal care products we put on our skin and hair create possible toxic exposures through skin absorption.
These include but are not limited to soaps, lotions, creams, cosmetics, shampoo's, deodorants, and other common products.
The air we breath can also be a source if our indoor air quality is compromised.

In 1989 a US. House subcommittee asked the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety to analyzes 2,983 chemicals used in personal care products,

·  884 were found to be toxic.

·  Of these 778 can cause acute toxicity,

·  146 can cause tumors,

·  218 can cause reproductive complications,

·  314 can cause biological mutation,

·  376 can cause skin and eye irritations.

"Personal care products should promote hygiene, health and beauty...not make us sick."

Of course, we don't mean to suggest that everyone will experience health problems the first time they use a product containing toxic ingredients, although many people do and they don’t know it.

In actuality, most poisonings happen slowly, over a long period of time by gradual skin absorption or by daily exposure in the air we breathe.
Today many people are aware of the fact that indoor air quality can include toxins but are sometimes surprised to learn that indoor air can be much worse to breathe than outdoor air.

According to the EPA, most homes have airborne concentrations and hazardous chemicals that are two to five times higher indoors than outdoors. In one five year study, the EPA reported that a number of homes had chemical levels that were seventy times higher inside than outside.
